Consultant Scientist
Dr Britland is a consultant scientist to AGT Sciences and a Reader in Cell Biology in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Bradford. His main interest is in the application of tissue engineering principles to wound repair, focusing in particular upon the concept of 'smart dressings' for dermal application. This has been underpinned by the successful culturing of a variety of human cell types implicated in the wound healing response and cataloguing their alignment, migration and differentiation response to micro-engineered culture substrates. AGT Sciences' hydrogel material has been successfully deployed to amplify cell populations and subsequently graft intact cell monolayers onto alternative surfaces. Properties of the hydrogel are also being examined as a device for controlled release of bio-actives.
Professor Vowden is first and foremost a vascular surgeon. He has established a Vascular Unit within Bradford serving a population of approximately 450,000. His post was one of the first pure vascular specialist post established outside of a teaching hospital in the UK
The unit has now grown into three joint consultant vascular outpatients, with additional multidisciplinary specialist TIA, leg ulcer and diabetic foot clinics, six scheduled arterial and three venous operating lists a week. The unit performs in excess of 500 reconstructions and 250 endovascular procedures each year, and this now includes endovascular aneurysm repair.
Profesor Vowden was the United Kingdom Secretary for the Vascular Surgical Chapter of the International Vascular Society from 1990 to 1995 and is currently a council member for the European Wound Management Association. Peter speaks at both national and international meetings, giving a number of “Master Class” sessions at both diabetic foot and wound care meetings, most recently giving an update on venous ulcer management to the European Wound Management association meeting in Stockholm (2000). He is very active in the European Wound Management Association, being a recent past President and a key opinion leader in this field.
